Prolotherapy for the Patient with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain
Seo Kyung-Mook

Abstract
Prolotherapy is a method of injection treatment designed to stimulate wound healing cascade. Various proliferent solutions including dextrose and sodium morrhuate are injected into the ligament, tendons and joint to encourage repair or strengthening of degenerative tissue. Stability of the spine and joint is largely supported from surrounded soft tissue structures, such as ligament and joint capsule, so called passive stabilizers, and muscles as active stabilizers. These are important not only in maintaining normal function but also in developing pathological or painful condition. Among large portion of patients with chronic pain, the dysfunction of fibro-osseous junction (ligament attatched site to bone) and teno-osseous junction (tendon insertion site to bone) could be found. Prolotherapy is beneficial for many patients complaining of chronic musculoskeletal pain, particularly when a history of trauma can be elicited. Except in patients with severe acute injury resulting in obvious ligament rupture, prolotherapy is effective.
